Charter schools' programs for the gifted, computer skills attract students
Why do parents choose charter schools over their own highly ranked districts? In some cases, they're enticed by sophisticated marketing from the for-profit companies behind Ohio's major charter chains and online schools, critics say.

Sheriff Jones: Toughen immigration laws
If  Governor John Kasich is serious about boosting Ohio’s economy – and easing government financial pressures — he should support stiffer illegal immigration laws, Butler County Sheriff Rick Jones said in a letter to the governor, released Wednesday.
“Illegal immigrants are causing a host of problems to the economy…they are working jobs that Ohioans would be happy to have,” Jones wrote. He asserts that some illegal immigrants are receiving workers’ compensation benefits and public assistance for food, shelter and medical care, “an additional burden on the financial struggles of our government.”
Jones wants stiffer penalties for illegal immigrants and for the employers who hire them – an agenda he has vociferously advanced for several years.
“Sir, this would be a great boost to Ohio’s economy if you could help pave the way for jobs for Ohioans,” Jones wrote.

He urged Kasich to help Sen. Bill Seitz, R-Green Township, and Rep. Courtney Combs, R-Hamilton, calling them “eager in their efforts to get legislation passed that will hinder the flow of illegal immigrants into Ohio.”
