Event caps first semester at the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Humanities Center
HIGHLAND HILLS — The chairman of the National Endowment for the Humanities will visit Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) on May 5 to lead the first community forum hosted by the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Humanities Center.
NEH Chairman William Adams will discuss how to connect the humanities with civic engagement, a key mission at the newly opened Mandel Humanities Center. He’ll explore the topic in an interview moderated by Lauren Onkey, chair and dean of the center.
The conversation will take place from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 5, in the Simon and Rose Mandel Theatre at Eastern Campus, located at 4250 Richmond Road in Highland Hills. Afterward, Tri-C’s Mandel Scholars will discuss how their work this semester can help lead change in education.

The forum serves as the capstone to the first semester of study by the center’s inaugural class of Mandel Scholars. The discussion with Adams will be driven by student questions about the importance of the liberal arts to the community and young learners.
Onkey said the student scholars have focused on how to improve education by building connections between the humanities and other fields, such as sciences, engineering and digital technology.
“They are eager to share their experiences with Mr. Adams and learn how they can take on leadership roles in the community and cultivate civic responsibility,” Onkey said.
Tri-C launched the Mandel Humanities Center to offer a unique liberal arts learning environment and cultivate civically responsible citizens to lead the region toward a stronger future. The goal is for the center to become a national model for addressing community concerns through the lens of the liberal arts.
Tri-C students worked in partnership with The City Club of Cleveland to organize the forum featuring Adams, who has been chairman of the NEH since 2014.
