Mayor Frank G. Jackson was joined by William Griswold, Director of the Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) and Steven Kestner, Board Chairman, for congratulatory remarks and to kick off CMA’s summer of centennial programs on East Boulevard. Themed A Season of Inspiring Celebrations: 100 Years in the Making, the museum will host a year-long series of exhibitions, programs and other celebrations to honor the museum’s past and look ahead to its future. One hundred years ago, the Cleveland Museum of Art opened its doors to the public with much fanfare, delight and a community full of excitement.
Mayor Jackson presented a proclamation in recognition of the 100th Anniversary of the Cleveland Museum of Art and its contributions and to congratulate the institution and all those who have played a role in its success over the past 100 years. The museum is renowned throughout the nation and the world for the quality and breadth of its collection, which spans 6,000 years of humankind, and is a significant international forum for exhibitions, scholarship, education and performing arts. The Cleveland Museum of Art remains free of charge to all, and welcomes more than 600,000 visitors annually.
The Cleveland Museum of Art recognizes that the position of international significance that it holds today can and should be leveraged for the good of our local community, our region and our state and is vitally important in defining Cleveland, Ohio as a community that values the power and importance of arts and culture in lives of its citizenry. The museum welcomes all citizens of Cleveland and northeast Ohio to participate in its centennial year programs at the museum and throughout the community. The Cleveland Museum of Art will begin its second 100 years from a position of strength and abiding commitment to its core mission:For The Benefit of All The People Forever. In addition to the kick-off event, attendees toured various galleries and had an opportunity to enjoy fun-filled activities and interactive displays.
