School choice period begins Jan. 25

Students and families can choose their schools for next school year, starting Monday, Jan. 25 and continuing until Wednesday, March 16.

CMSD is a portfolio district, offering a variety options so students can find the one that best fits their needs. Students may attend any school in the District, provided that there is space available and, in a few cases, they meet admissions criteria.

Students can still choose schools after March 16 but responding before the deadline will improve chances of getting their first selection. A lottery will be held if the number of requests exceeds the number of available seats.

For eighth-graders and older students, the District has published a High School Choice Book and will hold a high school choice fair from Jan. 25-27 at Cleveland State University’s Wolstein Center, 2000 Prospect Ave.

The fair will be open to parents and caregivers from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Jan. 27. Admission is free and free food will be available. Parking will be free in a CSU parking garage at East 21 Street and Prospect Avenue.

New high school options include two new small schools for Lincoln-West and one for James Ford Rhodes. Carnegie Corporation of New York has provided $3 million to plan and launch the models, which will offer a more personal education that better prepares students for the 21st Century workforce.

CMSD also has set up a new school choice portal that will go live on Jan. 25.

The portal will:
allow new families to log in and make a choice. In the past, families who were new to the District had to register students in person.
include an interactive map that shows schools and proximity to students’ homes.
list academic data and “conditions for learning” scores – student ratings for safety, support and academic rigor.
allow parents to stay informed by registering for email and text messaging.
let families choose and rank up to eight choices, an increase from the previous limit of five.

New and current CMSD families can find the new portal by clicking here. They will not be able to create accounts or log in until Jan. 25 but until then can use the portal to explore school options.
