Tri-C Student Earns National Academic Honor

Sharmayne Schaffer named to 2016 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team

HIGHLAND HILLS — Sharmayne Schaffer of Cuyahoga Community College (Tri-C®) has been named a 2016 Coca-Cola Community College Academic Team Scholar, a national award recognizing students for leadership, community service and academic excellence.

Two-year schools across the country nominated more than 1,900 high-achieving students for the team, which is sponsored by the Coca-Cola Foundation and administered by Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

An independent panel of judges selected Schaffer as one of 50 Bronze Scholars. She will receive a $1,000 scholarship and a medallion and be honored at Phi Theta Kappa’s annual convention in April.

Schaffer, of Garfield Heights, expects to graduate from Tri-C in May with an Associate of Arts. She plans to transfer to Case Western Reserve next fall to work toward a bachelor’s degree in Women’s and Gender Studies.

Her career goal is to open a nonprofit dedicated to mentoring young women.

Schaffer currently serves as president of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society chapter at Tri-C’s Eastern Campus. She also is campus editor for The Voice, the College’s award-winning student newspaper.

Earlier this year, Schaffer was selected for the inaugural class of future leaders attending Tri-C’s Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Humanities Center at Eastern Campus.
