Westfield Insurance Foundation Donates $45,000 to The Spanish American Committee

Grant to Provide Support for Comprehensive Approach to Help Families Overcome Multiple Barriers and Achieve Greater Stability

Cleveland, Ohio, December 14, 2015,–  The Spanish American Committee received a grant from Westfield Insurance Foundation for $45,000. The grant is part of Westfield’s focus on family stability in which grants were distributed to nonprofit agencies for their comprehensive approaches to help families overcome multiple barriers and achieve greater stability. Successful grantees demonstrated the ability to tie together several key challenges of families caught within a fragile economic situation.

The Spanish American Committee is initiating the Families First project designed to provide Family and Relationship Education to the Latino population for English/Spanish only speakers of Cuyahoga County, Ohio.  With a committed group of collaborators chosen to address issues revolving around Latino family health; we have combined our resources and areas of expertise to provide a cohort of programs to help strengthen families socially and economically.

“Westfield recognizes that vulnerable families face multiple issues and we want to help nonprofits in their approaches to reducing more than one barrier to success,” said Jani Groza, Westfield Insurance Foundation executive director and Westfield Insurance community investment leader. “When we look at the nonprofit agencies we support, we see unique insights into the demographic they serve, whether it’s parents or children.”

The Spanish American Committee was founded in 1966 and is the oldest social service agency serving the area’s Latino population. It was founded to enhance the capacity of Latinos to achieve economic well-being, to participate fully in society and to enjoy a full and productive life.  When SAC first opened, the primary service was teaching English as a second language. By the 1990s SAC’s operating objective was to help stabilize and strengthen the family unit, and then help create the conditions and resources within the family leading to social and economic well-being.

Over the years, SAC has developed its organizational capacity to deliver programs to nearly 6,000 families annually.

As a respected organization in our community and a United Way partner, SAC helps people find a way to turn economic barriers, crisis and difficulties into opportunities for progress, independence and a hope for a better way of life.  Along with serving a diverse and culturally rich community from more than 20 Latin American countries, SAC also serves other ethnicities from different parts of the world.
