Face time with Cleveland makeup artist Angela Rodriguez

By Ivan Gomez

Q: How long have you been a makeup artist and how did you get your start in the industry?
A: Makeup has been a part of my life for almost 6 years now. When I was 18 I started doing makeup for my friends and family for school dances. I practiced and practiced on myself and others because I became obsessed! At 19 I landed a job with Sephora and got certified for Customized Makeovers, Lash Application, and Class Facilitator. A year and a half later I became a MAC makeup artist earning certifications for Makeovers, Private Makeovers, Lash Application, and Lessons. Now at 23, I am the founder of MAKEUP MAGIC, LLC. A family business providing on-site services for any and all makeup needs.

Q: What do you love most about makeup?
A: Where do I begin.. to simplify, I love the ability to create an illusion of yourself through the magic of makeup. And then, if you wanted to, take it all off and create something completely different. It’s a form of expression, an accessory. You style your jewelry, nails and hair, but your face -your EYES- are the most fun and impactful feature to accessorize on yourself. And all the colors and textures and possibilities!

Q: If you weren’t a makeup artist, what else would you do?
A: I would start my own clothing line! I’m always recycling old clothes, shopping online, and fashion itself is another passion of mine. The best part of the day is getting ready and deciding how you’re going to look while you live your life that day. In Ohio, the weather is unpredictable and you learn to adapt wearing clothes for all seasons all year round. The capricious weather makes it fun!

Q: What is your signature look and what sets you apart from other makeup artists in Cleveland and Lorain?
A: I would have to say my signature look is something I refer to as “natural enhancement.” It’s simply makeup to enhance your bone structure and facial features in a subtle defining way, still giving a “makeup” look to it without losing the rawness of your natural self.
What sets me apart from other makeup artists is the ability to travel on-site, the versatility of styles, and the quality of work. Customer service is also a skill I proudly have attained. Working retail really helped! I have met all walks of life and can provide services to any and everyone. Makeup is a team effort between me and my client and I believe having a good relationship will allow us both to create the look they feel most comfortable in. If it’s not perfect, we’re not done! We aim for you to wear your makeup with confidence.

Q: What are common mistakes women make while doing their makeup?
A: Not getting close enough to the mirror, not taking their time, and using too much product. If you’re struggling to see where your brush/product is touching your face, scoot closer! Grab a hand held mirror. You don’t want any gaps or streaks to distract from your beauteous hard work. DON’T RUSH! This is number one. Often when trying to rush your makeup you make more mistakes. Can you rush through cooking? Can you rush through building a house? You can, but the end result will be 100% more worth it if you took your time and focused. Using too much product can cause your makeup to sit on your skin and blend improperly. It can leave embarrassing blotches and streaks so make sure you add a little bit at a time to build up to your desired intensity.

Q: Imagine that a girl asks you for a makeup style that is not suitable for her. How do you handle it?
A: It will be a version of the style you chose, tailored to you, for your features. Anyone can wear any style they desire as long as they customize to their face.

Q: Who are your beauty icons and why?
Definitely Audrey Hepburn and Jennifer Lopez. I love the way Audrey carries herself and how elegant her makeup style was. And of course the JLo glow all day, baby! She has the best sunkissed bronzed goddess looks.

Q: What is the most important beauty advice that you can give to women?
A: Take care of yourself and everything else will fall into place. As Sajel, my right hand, would say, “when life goes wrong, put lashes on it!”

Q: Does everyone look better with makeup?
A: No one necessarily looks better with makeup, it’s just the matter of how confident you feel. Someone wearing no makeup is just as beautiful with it. Like I said before, makeup is just an illusion and an accessory to your daily wardrobe. Makeup is for anyone!

Q: Do you think beauty is objective or subjective?
A: SUBJECTIVE! Absolutely positively subjective.

Q: What is your favorite quote?
A: “By failing to prepare, you are preparing to fail.” – Benjamin Franklin
Yes, I tell myself this everyday. There’s always something happening in this industry and so many obstacles to be ready for and not only makeup but in life! Sometimes you can’t help it and you don’t have the ability to prepare but when you’re one step ahead you often have more successes. That’s why we do trials! We want to make sure we have exactly the look you want on the day of the event.

Q: Share with us 3 random facts that very few people know!
A: I’m flat footed, my favorite color combo is pink and blue, I love to bake!

Q: Where our readers can find you and keep in touch with you?
