Republican Party of Cuyahoga County Chairman Rob Frost Comments on the Treasury Department’s Decision to Put Harriet Tubman on the $20 Bill

Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world.–Harriet Tubman

Cleveland, OH- Republican Party of Cuyahoga County Chairman Rob Frost commented today in support of the decision by the United States Department of the Treasury to place Harriet Tubman on the $20 bill.

“There is no private citizen in the grand and diverse history of our great country more deserving of the honor of gracing our currency than Harriet Tubman,” Chairman Frost said.

A slave herself, Tubman suffered physical issues throughout her life after being struck in the head by one of her masters at a young age. After escaping in 1849 she was a “conductor” on the Underground Railroad and is credited with guiding hundreds of others to freedom at considerable risk to her own life as slaveholders were known to have posted rewards for her capture. .

Chairman Frost also noted, “In addition to her well-known leadership on the abolition of slavery and her fearless efforts to guide slaves to freedom through the Underground Railroad, Tubman was an early champion of women’s suffrage. During the Civil War she served as an armed scout and spy and was the first woman to lead an armed expedition, which freed over 600 slaves.”

Tubman was a devoted Christian and an early member of the Republican Party, which championed the abolition of slavery and then the industrial capitalism of the recovering nation after the war. She recognized the value of free labor and property rights for former slaves in their quest for dignity and a prosperous future.

The Treasury Department announced on Wednesday that Tubman would replace the controversial Democrat Andrew Jackson on the nation’s $20 bill.
