Series of events celebrate 50 years of environmental progress since 1969 river fire

CLEVELAND – Mayor Frank G. Jackson, the City of Cleveland and more than 200 partner organizations will host the Cuyahoga50 Anniversary Week celebration Wednesday, June 19, 2019 through Sunday, June 23, 2019. The celebration, which is the largest series of clean water events in the country, commemorates 50 years of environmental progress since the infamous Cuyahoga River fire of 1969.

“Restoring the Cuyahoga River to its historic thriving vibrancy is part of my Sustainable Cleveland initiative. We have made great strides toward this goal with the help of residents and valuable community partners,” said Mayor Frank G. Jackson. “This week, we celebrate the community-wide efforts that have revived our river and we set the stage for future action that will continue reshaping Cleveland into a vibrant city with successful businesses and a flourishing natural environment.”

More than 25 clean water events will be held near or on the Cuyahoga River during the June 19-23 anniversary week celebration. Download a full event guide. Throughout 2019, over 100 community events, exhibits, conferences and performances are scheduled to take place in Greater Cleveland in commemoration of the 1969 river fire.
