Cleveland Golden Gloves semi-finals get underway this Friday

Fourteen bouts are scheduled to take place at the Brook Park Recreation Center (17400 Holland Rd, Brook Park) on Friday, April 17th, with the winners advancing to Saturday’s Finals, when there will be 25 fights.

The matchups begin at 7PM on Friday and 6PM on Saturday with tickets available for purchase at the door. General admission prices are $20 and $10 for children 12 and under on Friday and $25 and $15 for children 12 and under on Saturday. There is also $40 reserved seating available.

Among the 28 boxers stepping into the squared circle on Friday will be a few former Cleveland Golden Glove champions.

 Two-time champion Fred Wilson Jr, from Inner City Boxing Academy in Cleveland, was the 2012 winner and enters as the defending 165 pound Open Division Champion. He will be going against Brian McElrath JR of Rock Hard Cash Boxing Club in Akron.

 Defending 178 pound Open Division Champion Octavius Webb will take on Clemate Franklin of YMCA of Youngstown. Franklin earned an opening round bye last week while Webb won a decision over Chris Hardaway on Saturday.

 Three of the four boxers competing in the 201 pound Open Division are former champions.

 Kato Montgomery, from Bob Davis Boxing Club in Cleveland won the 201 pound Novice Division in 2012. He will be opposing Christopher Young from Downtown Boxing Club in Youngstown, with the winner taking on the winner between Roney Hines and Darion Peterson.

 Hines, like Montgomery, is also from Bob Davis Boxing Club and also won the 201 pound Novice Division, doing so in 2013. Peterson is from Old School Boxing Club/Strong Style Fight Team in Independence. He was the 2013 Sub Novice Division Champion at 178 pounds.
