CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA PERFORMS CONCERT HONORING DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.

The Cleveland Orchestra, conducted by Robert Porco performs its 35th annual concert in celebration of the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr. on Jan. 18, 2015 at 7 p.m. at Severance Hall. The concert is sold out, and will be broadcast live on WCLV (104.9 FM) and WCPN (90.3 FM).

The concert features the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Chorus (a volunteer chorus from the greater Cleveland community) prepared by William Henry Caldwell, and Sphinx Competition prizewinner Sterling Elliott as cello soloist.

At the beginning of the concert, Mayor Frank Jackson, assisted by Cleveland Councilman Kevin Conwell and Cuyahoga County Councilwoman Yvonne Conwell, will present the 2015 MLK Community Service Awards in three categories in recognition of the services and achievements of an adult, a youth, and a business or organization that have positively impacted Cleveland in the spirit of the teachings and example of Dr. King.

The following day from noon to 5 p.m. Severance Hall joins the city-wide celebration of Dr. King’s life with a free, public open house offering instrumental, vocal, and dance performances (no tickets required.) This day of music will feature performances by community musical ensembles and the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Orchestra and the Cleveland Orchestra Youth Chorus.

THE CLEVELAND ORCHESTRA TO HOLD FOOD DRIVE

The Cleveland Orchestra is participating in the national food drive, Orchestras Feeding America, which takes place Jan. 15 through 19, to benefit the Pope John Paul II Ozanam Center in Slavic Village. All concertgoers are invited to bring unexpired, non-perishable food items to donate at the following performances and events surrounding the Martin Luther King Jr. weekend:

 

Jan. 15 – The Cleveland Orchestra at 7:30 p.m.

Jan. 16 – The Cleveland Orchestra at 8 p.m.

Jan. 17 -The Cleveland Orchestra at 8 p.m.

Jan. 18 – The Cleveland Orchestra, MLK Celebration Concert at 7 p.m.

Jan. 19 – Severance Hall MLK Day Community Open House – noon to 5 p.m.

Marked bins will be available in the lobbies to collect donations one hour prior to each concert and throughout the Open House.

All unexpired, non-perishable food items are welcome, but most-needed food items are: beef stew, canned soup, canned vegetables, cereal, peanut butter, jelly, canned fruit and tuna fish.
