Upon arriving early to our meeting, I waited outside of 20 year old entrepreneur Mike Clum’s office not knowing what to expect. With a quick google search and some background info, I’d learned that he had started his successful media and marketing agency “Clum Media” in 2011 at the age of 18 years old from his parent’s basement. Since then, the company has moved to a studio loft and seen a 400% growth producing TV commercials, websites, social media, and marketing content for companies such as Universal Windows Direct, IBM, King Nut Companies, BlueBridge Networks, & many more. Going into 2015, Clum Media is projected to see another 400% growth which began to raise the question in my head, what is it that’s making this young company of five team members so successful?
The first clue to this question came to me while being greeted by the charismatic energy of Clum Media owner Mike Clum. With purpose in his walk, he shook my hand as we proceeded to his office located in the Hyacinth Lofts building. The office itself was a vividly colored creative space but what attracted my eye was the wall size dry-erase board covered in a matrix of organized scribble; all words pertaining to video production, results, and efficiency. Our entrance had interrupted Ian, the team’s video editor, who had been adding the final touches to an impressive commercial shot earlier this month. It was clear from their interaction that the team members gave an experienced eye to detail, focusing on the words being articulated by the customer and the quality of the images used within the video.
The more I observed, the more aware I became of Clum Media’s work approach and the factors behind their success. The company is passionate about creating business tools for customers that allow them to effectively communicate messages and maintain an image. They start the process by understanding the desired goal of a company’s investment in marketing and in doing so produce high-quality material that aims for a positive return on investment. We’re talking about a group of young professionals who meet deadlines and deliver on the marketing needs of growing businesses in Northeast Ohio. My first impression of Clum Media has left me with a mental picture painted by a 20 year old visionary redirecting youthful energy into an active work-ethic. Under the wing of Mike Clum, I see the promise of a business that is dedicated to its craft and whose proven ability to grow, as well as assist in the growth of other companies, demands our attention
