EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW TO DJ CHEVI RED “AS A FEMALE DJ IT IS HARD, BUT TALENT CANNOT BE DENIED.”

By Ivan Gomez

Hello Chevi Red. It’s a great feeling to talk with you, with female deejay, so please tell me about yourself? Who is Dj Chevi Red?
I am Chevalier De Jesus, a devoted mother of 3, and an entrepreneur. I am a strong & determined woman who is God fearing, works hard, loves to laugh and enjoys making others smile, every day I wake up with a positive mindset and along with making people dance, I try to inspire others by sharing my story.

How did you first get into the DJ world? What makes you want to DJ?
My love of Music and people, music makes the soul feel good, 3 months ago, I had an unexpected stroke and it really put life into perspective.
While in the hospital all I thought about was getting back home to my family and my turntables! This is when I said, “Hey, you have to do this now, you never know what tomorrow may bring”.

Do you think that the deejay world is men’s world? In your opinion is it harder for a girl to become deejay?
I don’t think the DJ world is a man’s world…yes, the majority of DJs are men, but the presence of a woman has when she rocks a stage is much more impactful, as a female DJ it is hard, but talent cannot be denied.

What have you learned since you started out as a DJ?
Since becoming a DJ I have learned that it is a very specific art form, once you have learned the basics, the creative possibilities are endless.

What about Dj Chevi Red, what’s the deal with red, why not blue, pink, yellow? Why red?
I am DJ Chevi Red because of my love for red lipstick, for me, red lipstick symbolizes a strong and bold woman. A woman who is not afraid to stand out in a crowd and let the world know she means business.

How do you feel when you’re DJing?
The feeling I have when I am in the DJ booth is indescribable, I love to see people happy, so for that short time, I am able to help people forget the stresses of life and enjoy it, to see a dance floor full of people enjoying the music I play, is one of the most rewarding feelings I have ever felt.

How do you prepare your sets?
First, I speak with the coordinator or promoter of the event and find out the “vibe” they would like and then I build a playlist based on genres specific for that event.

What are your biggest sources of inspiration when you are mixing?
Every time I turn my table on, I think about my babies, I want to be great for them, when I am mixing and playing, the crowd is my motivation, I feed off of their energy and want to make sure they leave wanting to jam with me again.

Do you ever feel like you are in competition with another DJ’s?
I do not compare myself to other DJs, I am my own competition and every day I work hard to continue improving my skills.

What styles are most prevalent in your mixes?
I incorporate a few styles into my mixes, scratching, blending, etc. I spin all genres of music; my music knowledge is insane…Insane in the membrane.

Your favorite musicians and songs?
All-time favorite is Michael Jackson “Wanna be Starting Something”, Selena “God’s Child”, Stevie B “Spring love”… the list is long, Cardi B, Bruno Mars, Marvin Gaye, Lisa Lisa, and Biggie, just to name a few more.

What artists and or genres do you think are the most exciting in 2018?
I believe Ms. Cardi B has taken the world by storm and of course Bad Bunny, I truly lobe how they embrace multiple genres of music…Trap, reggaeton, pop, hip-hop, dembow etc.

Well, I think too many questions my friend, do you want to add anything else or have shout outs?
I would like to shout out my Parents, Richard/Cherese DeJesus for giving me life and raising me with such strong ethics, also to my love, Shane Rader for being my rock and supporting me in everything that I do.

OK Chevi, I think this would be all for this time, I want to say thanks for your time and I wish you further many nice moments in your music and in private life with lots of success.
Thank you, it was my pleasure.
