Nelson Cintron Sr. “El Sagitario”, The pioneer of the Hispanic Radio wave in Cleveland, passed at the young age of 86.

Nelson Cintron Sr. “El Sagitario” was the first Latino radio personality in the Greater Cleveland area in the year 1964, working for WZAK 93.1, WXEN 106.5 and many other station throughout his career. He also became the First Latino Deputy Sheriff for Cuyahoga County in 1969. Sheriff Ralph Krieger use to call him “My favorite son”

Mr. Cintron Sr. moved to Cleveland in the 1952, at 21 years old, to the area we now call Tremont. In moving to Chicago, he opened his own record store, laundromat and became a radio personality.

His love and passion for the broadcasting world took him back to Puerto Rico where he started acting in a TV show playing a character called “Don Panchito”. In this role, he played an old Man who danced and loved the world. On the radio, he also was the voice of “Doña Panchita” the wife of “Don Panchito”, and had skits of the loving couple who chat about daily life and argue as husband and wife.

While living in Puerto Rico, he also found a devotion to not only be of service to his community through laughter and entertainment, but also felt compelled to protect it by becoming a Law Enforcement officer for the Narcotics Unit.

When most of his friends and family from his hometown of Yauco, Puerto Rico began settling in Cleveland, he moved back.

As a Latino radio personality, he hosted the late Carl Stokes on his show and echoed to the community the importance of electing the first African American Mayor in a major city. He also believed women have an important role in our Legislative branch and helped Congresswoman Mary Rose Oakar with her election, calling her “a friend of our community”.

He played a major role in communicating to the Latino community, through his radio show, important issues and updates

Mr. Nelson Cintron Sr. “El Sagitario” helped establish the first radio station in Cleveland through Cable TV channel 54, called “La Cadena Mundial Hispana”, which broadcasted 24 hours a day in the 1990’s.

His mission was to teach future generations about the broadcasting industry and his legacy will continue for years to come as the Latino pioneer of radio in the Greater Cleveland area.

Mr. Nelson Cintron Sr. is survived by his beloved wife Isaura Cintron- Torres, and children: Vidalia, Adrian, Jose A, Reynaldo, Luz, Maria, Kenny, Nelson Jr. (Teresa Montes) and Maria Milagros. (Eliezer Caraballo)
