Seeds of Literacy Expands Services to Latino Community with Pilot Program

GED Tutoring Offered in Spanish

Cleveland, OH (05-15-2019) – Seeds of Literacy, known for its unique one-to-one tutoring model, has launched a pilot program to provide tutoring for basic education and the GED in Spanish.
“The United Way of Greater Cleveland challenged us to serve more people from the Latino Community by offering instruction in Spanish with our personalized instruction model,” said Bonnie Entler, Executive Director. “Our current student population is 11% Latino.”

In association with Esperanza, the resulting pilot program will offer one-to-one tutoring by bilingual tutors to Spanish-speaking adults preparing for their GED.The pilot program will cover all areas of the GED — language arts (reading and writing), math, social studies, and science. All instruction will be conducted in Spanish.

The pilot will be similar to the award-winning adult education program that Seeds already offers, with a few key exceptions. Student Orientations will be held monthly (instead of weekly), and class tutoring sessions be held on Tuesdays and Thursdays only from 5:30pm – 7:30pm. Both Orientation and Classes will be held at Seed of Literacy’s West branch, located on the corner of W. 25th and Clark.

“We are very excited to expand our program to be more inclusive to the Latino Community,” said Program Director Dr. Carmine Stewart. “To make this pilot a success, we are actively recruiting bilingual tutors who can guide students through curriculum written in Spanish.”
